Major of Sericulture Science
Sericulture science in Yunnan Agricultural University has a long history since 1940s. Although the enrollment was disrupted for several reasons, the sericulture science resumed enrollment in 2008. There are 4 full-time teachers with master’s and doctor's degree, including two associate professors and two Ph.D.. Teachers conduct researches on controlling pest and mulberry diseases and the biology of silkworm.
The laboratory is 150 m2, including most types of teaching instruments and equipments. With this major set, the experiment studies can fill the need of undergraduate students’ experiments teaching, such as Silkworm Physiological Anatomy, Silkworm Nosology, Cocoon and Cocoon process, Mulberry Cultivation and Breeding Science.
Main courses are Plant Physiology, Fundamentals of Biochemistry, Silkworm Physiological Anatomy, Silkworm Nosology, Cocoon and Cocoon Process, Mulberry Cultivation and Breeding Science, Sericulture Science, Breeding and Genetics and Breeding of Silkworm, Mulberry Pest Science, Sericulture Economy Management. 4 academic years and awarded Agronomy Bachelor Degree. Students are trained with foundation Sericulture Science that involve developing students’ professional and comprehensive skills, such as conducting teaching, researching, technological extension, managing, marketing in academic institutions, companies, universities, and governmental offices and so on, which are often needed in workplaces and further researching programmes.
Major of Landscape Architecture
The major of Landscape Architecture was developed from the landscape garden planning and design direction of the landscape major in Department of Landscape. It belongs to College of Landscape and Horticulture in Yunnan Agricultural University. The major Landscape of the Department began recruiting students in 1999. In 2012 the major Landscape Architecturehas been applied successfully and began to recruit students in 2013.
After about 15 years of construction and development, the major Landscape Architecture has already formed a reasonable structure of degrees teaching team of high academic level, age, professional ranks and titles. There are 22 full-time teachers, among whom there are 4 professors, 10 associate professors, 7 lecturers. Also there are 10 Ph.D (1 post doctor), 5 master degrees, 3 studying Ph.D, the ratio of staff with Ph.D and master degree is about 70% of the total staff.
The experiment and teaching ofLandscape Architectureare fulfilled mainly in 6 laboratories, such as Landscape Art Room, LandscapeDrawing Room, and Computer Aided Design Room, Agricultural Foundation Experiment Teaching Center, and Flower Research Institute of Yunnan Agricultural University. The area of experiment amounts to approximate 1200 m2, which has almost all the types of teaching instruments and equipments. This major sets the experiment studies about landscape planning and design, landscape ecology, art foundation, computer aided design, landscape engineering, city green space planning, landscaping, architectural structure, landscape dendrology, floriculture, which can basically fill the need of undergraduate students’experiments and routine teaching tasks. Meanwhile, it has some outside teaching and practice bases such as World Horticultural Garden, numerous parks and landscape companies in Yunnan Province.
The major Landscape Architecturefocuses on cultivation of students and has the characteristics in agricultural environment protection. Teachers often base their researches on 4 directions, namely, Landscape Planning and Design Theory, Application of Ornamental Plants, City Planning and Architectural Design, Landscape Construction and Management.
At present, there are 200 undergraduate students studying Landscape Architecture, and 60 undergraduate students are admitted every year. Graduates of the same major enjoy good employment prospects and they are likely to work in trades of landscape design, landscape engineering, garden seedlings, flower production and other fields of garden industry, which constantly provide the excellent talents for the development of garden industry of Yunnan Province.
Major of Landscape
The BSC major of Landscape is affiliated to the college of Landscape and Horticulture in Yunnan Agricultural University since 1999. Golf Course Management was added and began to enroll students in 2012. This major is listed as one of the university key constructed characteristic specialties in 2010.
Since it was established 14 years ago, the department of LA has developed a group of teaching staff with high academic level and rational structure in age, professional title and academic abilities. There are 28 full-time teachers, including 4 professors, 9 associate professors, 46.4% of whom are experienced and senior teachers in position and of whom 8 are scholars with doctoral degree, 11 are scholars with master's degree and 5 are working for PhD, 67.9% teaching staff have master's degree or above.
The practice teaching is mainly based on LA laboratories, university basic experimental teaching center of agricultural and garden nursery bases to carry out the work of teaching and scientific research. The laboratories occupy approximately 1200m2. There are 8 laboratories, lab of garden plant breeding, lab of garden plant cultivation, landscape drawing room, art room, lab of garden plant tissue culture, lab of CAD, lab of dry flower making and exhibition hall of garden, equipped with all kinds of general teaching instruments and equipment, as the teaching lab of floriculture, ornamental dendrology, genetics and breeding of garden plants, tissue culture of garden plants, agrostology, flower postharvest physiology and technology, landscape planning and design, golf course construction, which aim to meet the needs of undergraduate practice teaching. The practice bases are Kunming Expo’ Garden, Tonghai Lidu Flower Company, Kunming urban golf club and other companies, while the golf course management practice base of the campus is under construction.
The major focuses not only on the cultivation of students but also on the certain features in the flower resources and germplasm innovation, modern urban farm planning etc. Teaching staff began to engage in flower resources utilization research since 1994. Five researching fields are as following, flower resources and germplasm innovation, landscape planning and design, golf course management, flower postharvest physiology and technology, the application of landscape plants.
There are more than 960 undergraduates and 160 master students have graduated since 1999. At present, there are 210 full-time undergraduate students and 58 MSC students, and annual intake students are about 60 undergraduates and 18 master students. 15-20% graduates are expected to continue to pursue a master's or doctor's degree each year. The employment prospects of the graduates are promising. Some of the graduated students are employed in the enterprises of gardening, flowers and real estate. Some are employed in the urban construction bureau, planning bureau, bureau of parks, forestry bureau or schools, but the majority mainly engage in landscape planning and design, landscape engineering, green conservation, flowers seedling cultivation, teaching and scientific research. And some may start their own business after graduation.
