CAW focuses on the development of Yunnan wheat breeding, wheat summer reproduction technology system establishment, and untertakes key technology projects of national and Yunnan province
Sugarcane Research Institute of Yunnan Agricultural University
1. Brief introduction
Sugarcane Research Institute(SRI) of Yunnan Agricultural University was founded in 1997. SRI has nine faculty and staff, including 3 professors, 3 associate professors, 1 young academic leader of Yunnan, and 2 experts of Sugarcane Industry Technical System Construction Project of Yunnan Province. SRI has hosted more than 20 research projects, including the State Natural Science Foundation project, Sugarcane Industry Technical System Construction Project, and other ministrial and provincial projects, etc. SRI has won 1 second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 second prize of Natural Science and 1 third prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of Yunnan province. 1 self-bred and 4 introduced sugarcane varieties were certified by the Variety Certification Committee of Yunnan province. The varieties hav been popularized to plant in farms of two hundred thousand hectares so far. SRI has published 5 academic monographs or textbooks, and more than 100 scientific papers were published, including more than 10 articles in SCI. SRI has trained hundreds of senior talents for Yunnan province and China.
Investigation and study of sugarcane germplasm resource
The collection of wild sugarcane germplasm resource began in 1959. More than 10 collections Nationwide and in Yunnan only were performed from 1985 to 1993. The wild sugarcane germplasm resource garden with more than 1000 clones of 18 species under 9 genera was built on campus of YAU (1930m in elevation). This scientific achievement has received the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award.
Sugarcane varieties introduction and axillary budrapid reproduction
To relieve the awkwardness that the sugarcane varieties of Yunnan province, for a long time, depended on introduction from other provinces or countries , SRI introduced 56 sugarcane new varieties and selected ROC16, ROC20, ROC22 and R6048 by axillary budrapid reproduction technique .These varieties were certified by the Variety Certification Committee of Yunnan province in 2002 and popularized in main sugarcane planting area of more than two hundred thousand hectares in Yunnan and Sichuan province, bringing about economical benifits of more than several hundred million yuan. This scientific achievement has received a second prize of Science and Technology Progress Award and a third prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of Yunnan province.
Sugarcane breeding for higher elevation planting area
Sugarcane breeding was performed by crossing with wild sugarcane species science 1998. Cultivated sugarcane and Erianthus fulvus was successfully crossed and new sugarcane species line selected from the hybrids holds the record for 150 ton each hectare. This scientific achievement has received a second prize of Natural Science Award of Yunnan province. New sugarcane cultivar Dianzhe 01/58 selected and bred is with genetic material of Erianthus fulvus and resistant to drought and cold .
Based on the achievements mentioned above, plateau sugarcane breeding with distinct features has been set up. This research direction mainly focuses on the selection of new sugarcane cultivars that fit for planting in higher elevated area (>1300m) and can use fuel ethanol only to produce cane sugar. The popularization of these new cultivars will effectively regulate the fluctuation of cane sugar market and relieve the stress of socioeconomic development that resulted from energy crisis, avoid the potential conflict for land use with sugar-use sugarcane and foodstuff to ensure national food and sugar security.

Yunnan Research Center on Good Agricultural Practice for Dominant Chinese Medicinal Materials
Institute of Chinese Medicinal Materials at Yunnan Agricultural University ,Yunnan Technical Guidance Center on Good Agricultural Practice for Chinese Medicinal Materials, and Yunnan Research Center on Good Agricultural Practice for Dominant Chinese Medicinal Materials are three scientific research platforms which jointly share resources and incorporate.
Aim and task of the center is to construct the base of Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) for Chinese medicinal materials and the base of qualified scientists and technicians for Chinese medicinal materials, and to promote the development of the industry of Chinese medicinal materials.
Among more than 20 faculty and staff in the center, there are 8 Creative Talents in Yunnan province, 5 doctoral supervisors, 8 professors. The talent team mainly consists of professors and young doctors.
The center has undertaken many projects including more than 10 State Natural Science Fundation project, and other 10 Provincial projects. The center has become major technical support of GAP for Chinese medicinal materials in Yunnan province.

Experimental Center of Crop Science
ETCCS is equipped with 56 faculty and staff, either in full-time or part-time, and four professional laboratories, i.e. the agronomy professional laboratory, seed science and engineering professional laboratory, cultivation and identification of Chinese herbal medicine professional laboratory, biotechnology and physiological and biochemical professional laboratory.
ETCCS offers experimental curriculums involving food crops, energy crops, medicinal crops, including basic verification and demonstration experiments, designing and comprehensive experiments, research and innovative experiments.
ETCCS has provided experiment and research platforms for over 50 innovation projects, and 20 scientific research tasks. In recent five years, the center has completed over 20 pedagogical projects, over 80 scientific research projects, with over 45 million yuan of research fund. ETCCS has published 400 papers, and won 11 teaching achievement awards and 14 Science and Technology Achievement Awards.
