Department of Grassland Science

1. History

Department of Grassland Science of College of Animal Science and Technology (CAST) was founded in 1999, and began to enroll its first undergraduate students in the same year. The department was given the right to award Master’s degree in 2000. The major was listed as a provincial key discipline by Yunnan Education Department in 2001, and was officially recognized as a provincial key discipline in 2007. It was allowed to offer as a first-level discipline Doctorate program and Master’s degree program in 2011. After 15 years’ development, the grassland science is now a provincial key discipline with great influence on southern grassland research, talent training and technology promotion.

2. Faculty

At present, there are 23 teachers in the department (16 fulltime teachers in YAU and 7 Master’s Supervisors from other co-operating research institutes). The faculty consists of 1 academic leader of Yunnan Province, 3 Ph.D supervisors 12 professors or researchers, six associate professors, 1 advanced experimentalist, and 4 lecturers and experimentalists. 10 of them have a PhD and 7 of them have a Master’s degree, representing 93.8 % of the staff.

3. Teaching and Research Platforms

Teaching and research platforms in the department include the National Teaching Centre of Agricultural Science, the Provincial Key Laboratory of Animal Nutrition and Feed, the Key Laboratory of Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau Grassland Resources and Utilization of Yunnan , the Grassland Science Recognition Center on campus and the Grassland-Beef Cattle Practice Base affiliated to Yunnan Herbivore Animal Science Academy.

4. Education Scale

The department has graduated more than 400 undergraduate students since 1999. Its graduate program started in 2001 and 70 post-graduate students have graduated since 2004. The department wasauthorized to award doctoral degrees in 2012.

5. Teaching and Research Achievements

5.1 Textbook Compilation

Textbooks compiled chiefly by us are Turf Grass Breedingand Lawn Management Science(agricultural university textbooks). Besides, we have also co-complied four other textbooks. They are Forage and Forage Crop Breeding, Forage and Forage Crop Cultivation, Practice Guidency for Turf Science, Turf Irrigation and Drainage(agricultural university textbooks), and Scientific Research Method(the 11th five-year plan higher education on agriculture and forest). A whole textbook system on theory-experiment-practice has been established.

5.2 Curricula Construction

The course Forage and Forage Crop Seed have been constructed as high-quality curriculum at both provincial and university level. The courses Grassland Resources, Turf Establishment and Management and Forage and Forage Crop Cultivationhave been constructed as the A-class curricula in YNAU. The course Sports Tturf Maintenance is under construction as the A-class curriculum in YNAU.

Our teachers have won a lot of awards and honors, such as the third prize in Classroom Teaching Contest of YNAU in 2012, the third prize in Multi-Media Teaching Software Competition of Yunnan Province in 2011.

5.3 Research Achievements

A lot of teachers have taken charge in projects of education reform,and they have published more than ten papers. TheCurriculumReform of Forage and Turfgrass Seedwas awarded the second prize of YNAU excellent educational research in 2008, andLocal characteristic teaching material of Forage Production (for the southern part of China) was awarded the second prize of YNAU Excellent Educational Research in the same year.

Department of Aquaculture

1. History

CAST Department of Aquaculture was found in 2013. Junior students majored in aquaculture were admitted from 2000 to 2001. Undergraduate studentsmajored in aquaculture have been recruited since 2006. The Master’s program for Special Economic Animal Breeding (focusing on special aquatic animal breeding and utilizing) was launched in 2011.

2. Faculty

At present, there are 9 teachers in the department. The faculty consists of 1 Candidates for the Young and Middle-aged Academic Leaders of Yunnan Province, 1 Hundred Young Academic Leadersof YNAU,3 associate professors, 1 advanced experimentalist, and 2 lecturers, 2 assistant experimentalists and 1 assistant veterinarian. 4 of them have a PhD and 5 of them have a Master’s degree.

3. Teaching and Research Platforms

Teaching and research platforms in the department includeNational Teaching Centre of Agricultural Science Basic Experiments, the Key Laboratory of Animal Nutrition and Feed Science of Yunnan Province, the Experimental Teaching Center for Animal Science of Yunnan Province, Aquaculture Laboratory, and Aquaculture Station in Yunnan Province which is a teaching practice base outside the campus.

4. Education Scale

The department has graduated 70 junior students since 2000. Its undergraduate program started in 2006 and more than 230 students have graduated since 2010.

5. Achievements of Teaching and Research

5.1 Textbook compilation

Our teachers have compiled one textbook (namely Handbook of Feed Standards Specification and Detection) andparticipated in the compilation of Handbook of Feed Application and English for Animal Science.

5.2 Curricula Construction

The courses Hydrobiology has been constructed as the A-class course of YNAU. Courses Aquatic Animal Nutrition and Feed and Culture and Enhancement of Fish are under construction as the A-class course of YNAU.

5.3 Teaching achievements

The faculty members have conducted some programs on education reform, and published 3 relevant papers.

Department of Animal Basic Science

1. History

CAST Department of Animal Basic Science was found in 1995 after the merging of the teaching and research offices of Zoology, Animal Anatomy, Animal Physiology, Animal Biochemistry, and Animal Histology and Ambryology.

2. Faculty

At present, there are 10 teachers in the department, among whom there are 3 Master’s Supervisors, 1 professors, 4 associate professors, and 4 lecturers. 3 of them have a PhD and 6 of them have a Master’s degree, representing 90 % of the staff.

3. Teaching and Research Platform

Teaching and research platforms of the department include the National Teaching Demonstration Centre for the Basic Experiments of Agricultural Majors and Provincial Teaching Centre of Animal Science Experiments.

4. Education Scale

The department provided 14 courses for under-graduates and 10 courses for postgraduate studies.
