Features and Advantages of College of Resources and Environmental Sciences

With the fast economic development, resources become increasingly scarce, and the global environment has deteriorated rapidly, and the environmental issues have become increasingly prominent. There are some problems in Yunnan, such as decline of soil fertility, irrational application of fertilizer and pesticides, water pollution of highland lake, water and soil loss caused by ecological damage, agricultural solid waste pollution, agricultural nonpoint pollution, ecological damage at mining area and soil pollution, etc. Meanwhile there is a need for improving the quality of environment and agricultural products.

In response to these problems, College of Resources and Environment is committed to resource conservation and efficient use of crop nutrients, control of agricultural pollution, security of agricultural products, agricultural production characterized by highland and construction of ecological civilization, and to carry out teaching, research and social service work on these issues, with significant features and advantages, mainly in the following areas:

1. Teachers

CRES has 43 faculty members, including 4 post-doctors, 14 doctors, 21 masters, and the teachers who has a master’s degree and above accounted for 90.7% of the total. The college has 6 professors, twelve associate professors, two senior technicians, three doctoral tutors, twelve master instructors. There was National New Century talent, the State Council special allowance experts, the provincial teacher, the young academic leaders of Yunnan, Yunnan university teaching and research leaders, outstanding environmental technology workers, etc. CRES has a strong faculty with a reasonable age structure, educational structure and professional title structure.

2. Disciplines

CRES has a directory outside Subordinate Discipline Doctoral “Plant Nutrition and Disease Control” doctoral program. The college has seven master sections, including two first grade discipline master sections named “Agricultural Resources and Environmental Science” and “Environmental Science and Engineering”, and four subordinate master discipline named “Plant Nutrition”, “Soil Science”, “Environmental Science”, and “Environmental Engineering”, as well as “Water, Soil Conservation and Desertification Control”, “Facility Cultivation and Environment” and “Agriculture Environmental Protection”. The college has four key disciplines, including key construction discipline of provincial Academy of Agricultural Resource Utilization doctorate program, key discipline of provincial agricultural resources utilization, key discipline of provincial Plant Nutrition, and key discipline of provincial Environmental Science and Engineering. There are six undergraduate programs totally, named “Agricultural Resources and the Environment”, “Environmental Science”, “Environmental Engineering”, “Land Resources and Management”, “Facility Agriculture Science and Engineering” and “Ecology”. These provide a strong support for the construction of disciplines and specialty.

3. Textbook Construction

CRES edit or associate edit more than 30 national textbooks. The edited books are national “11th 5-Year Plan” textbook Introduction to Environmental Ecology, advanced agriculture and forestry "11th 5-Year Plan "textbook Agricultural Environment, national "12th 5-Year Plan" textbook Environmental Soil Science, Yunnan Province "12th 5-Year Plan" Soil and Fertilizer Science, Soil and Fertilizer practice course and so on

4. Research Platform

The college has Farmland Conservation Institute Field Experiment Station of Ministry of Agriculture, Yunnan Agricultural Environment Pollution Control and Ecological Restoration Engineering Laboratory, Provincial Environmental Science and Engineering Innovation training base, the provincial universities Agricultural and Environmental Resources key laboratory, the provincial university agricultural nonpoint source pollution control Engineering Research Center, institute of Ecology and Environment, institute of Soil and Fertilizer and other research platforms. Teaching demonstration center of provincial university Agricultural Resources and Environment has three laboratories of environmental science and engineering, plant nutrition, land resources. Practice teaching for the majority of teachers and students to carry out scientific research, as well as graduate students, undergraduates provides a reliable protection. These platforms provide a reliable protection for teachers and students to carry out scientific research and practice teaching.

5. Scientific Research

CRES hosted a series of research projects, including the EU's Sixth Framework Program, China-France advanced research and development programs, major projects of national water pollution prevention and control, the National Support Program, the National Natural Science Foundation of China - Yunnan Joint Fund, 973 Plan, National Natural Science Foundation, National Science and Technology Program Agricultural sector, the agro-industrial system project, Yunnan Natural Science Foundation, Yunnan international cooperation, cooperation between universities and province in Yunnan, etc.

These scientific research has significant features and advantages in nutrient efficient use of resources, agricultural nonpoint source pollution control, UV radiation ecology, remediation of contaminated soils, water conservation of sloping land, improvement of greenhouse soil, special and economical crops and fertilization, pollution-free agricultural production, etc.

CRES made ??a breakthrough in the control of agricultural nonpoint source pollution, the control of soil heavy metals and pesticide pollution, ecological restoration of farmland. CRES also carried out a lot of word and has accumulated rich experience at fertilization of vegetables, tobacco, flowers, sugar cane, rice, corn, potatoes, bananas, coffee and other crops, at formula fertilizer, and at research and develop of special fertilizer, bio-organic fertilizer and new fertilizers, also at techniques of matrix nursery, soilless culture, and fertilizer utilization of organic waste.

There were a total of 40 research projects, with a total funding of more than 20 million yuan. The college was rewarded two second prizes of natural science awards and seven third prizes of natural science and technology progress awards. In the past five years more than 300 scientific papers were published, including more than 20 articles in SCI or EI.
