The National Engineering Research Center of Agricultural Biodiversity Technology and Application was approved to establish in 2002, and it completed the construction and passed the acceptance in June, 2009. There are 127 faculty and staff in the center, among whom 55 are professors and 38 are associate professors. 16 scholars have received the government special allowance awards. The center is proud of having 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 973-project chief-scientists, 1 national outstanding professional talent, 3 national outstanding contribution experts, 1 national model teacher and 1 national figure of the 10 National “Agriculture, Rural Areas and Farmers” awards .
The center’s fixed asset is 94.6582 million yuan.The total value of the four 29,740 m2-scientific research buildings, the 104m3-resource-database building，and the 1,028m2-greenhouse is 62.9223 million yuan. The total value of 1,123 sets of equipments is 31.7359 million yuan. The four research systems have been established, which are the genetic diversity study, the crop diverse nutrition research, the photothermal unitization research, agricultural biodiversity physiological and biochemical study, and the information network for agricultural biodiversity technology and application. The center concentrated on conducting three research fields, which are the agricultural biodiversity temporal and spatial optimization and food production increase, the pest and disease control using agricultural biodiversity and the agricultural biodiversity sustainable development.Focusing on meeting the needs of the harmonious development of national economy and resource environment, the center’s research aims at undertaking the forefront study of agricultural biodiversity, and highlighting the mutual promotion of the utilization and protection of the agricultural biodiversity by relying on the unique biodiversity resources of Yunnan Province. At present, the researchers have succeeded in developing theories and practices regarding using agricultural biodiversity in pests and disease control, such as the genetic heterogeneity theory, the pathogen dilution and physical block theory and the ecological system comprehensive function principle. Based on the innovation theory, the researchers have constructed the biodiversity application model which achieved the technology innovation of crop pests and diseases ecological control.
During the latest 5 years, 651 academic papers and 14 monographs have been published. The center has applied for 96 patents and 38 patents have been authorized. The research achievements have received 1 international award, 1 National Invention Second Prize, 6 ministerial and provincial first prizes, 4 second prizes, and 6 third prizes. The center is also dedicated to outreach programs. The technology of genetic diversity of rice blast control for high productivity has been applied in 63.61 million acres covering 11 provinces. This technology helps to improve 67-92% disease control effect and reduce 56-62% use of pesticide, leading to the 7.5-11% increase in the productivity and farmers income with 5.412 billion yuan. Moreover, the technology of biodiversity and disease control for high productivity has been utilized in 1.2287 billion acres covering 9 provinces. This technology helps to promote 27-62% disease control effect and reduce 53-71% use of pesticide, leading to the 16-41% increase in the productivity and farmers income with 11.364 billion yuan. The center has successfully selected and cultivated 23 new varieties of maize, among which 13 varieties are domestic registered, and another 10 types are registered in Indonesia, Malaysia, Burma, Laos. The cumulative extension of these varieties of maize has reached 29.4443 million acres, of which 6.9063 million acres are applied in the areas of foreign countries, bringing significant economic benefit and profound international influence.
